How to make Gyros in the Air Fryer

Air Fryer Gyros

I am not sure what TV Show I was watching that said “never order take out for something that you can make at home” which I KNOOOOWWW applies to everything. However, some things are MUCH easier to cook up at home. Gyros in the Air Fryer was one of those things. I just knew I needed to figure out how to make it at home.

Why make Gyros in the Air Fryer?

For me personally, choosing the Air Fryer to cook this dinner was the natural choice ONLY because I really to ensure that I captured an awesome crisp on the outside of the gyro meat. I have been experimenting a lot with my Air Fryer as I tend to focus a LOT on my Instant Pot (@instantpotdave). I’m here to tell you, it was the right choice! We also live full time in our Fifth Wheel, so pulling out the Air Fryer is the MUCH easier choice.

Homemade Gyros and French Fries. The Perfect Match.

My kids love French fries, so it is no accident that I needed to add them to this dinner. I know this dinner would be just as delicious without them (as we had leftovers two nights in a row), but adding French fries kicked it up a notch. These were the perfect little nuggets of flavor that just enhanced the over taste of this dinner. I also made them in the Air Fryer, which was perfect as it allowed the meat to be set to the side and rest a bit. I highly recommend this addition, although the receipt does work just as well without them.

Don’t Forget the Tzatziki Sauce.

I made a separate post about the Tzatziki sauce that we used! It is delicious and refreshing and I highly recommend it when cooking this dinner. Check it out here.

  • 1 egg
  • 2 Tbsp Fresh Lemon Juice
  • 1 Sweet or Red Onion Diced
  • 4 Large Garlic Cloves diced, minced or pressed
  • 1 Tbsp Salt
  • 1/4 tsp Black Pepper
  • 2 tsp Oregano
  • 1/2 tsp Thyme
  • 1 tsp Marjoram
  • 1 tsp Rosemary
  • 1 tsp Cumin
  • 1/2 tsp Crushed Red Peppers
  • 2 Tbsp Olive Oil (Robust Prefered)
  • 6 Pita Bread or Flatbread
  • Green Lettuce torn into medium pieces
  • 3 Roma Tomatoes (1 Tomato = 2 Gyros)
  • 1/2 Sweet Onion sliced thin
  • 1-2 cups Tzatziki Sauce (recipe link)
  • ~2 cups Frozen Thin Cut Fries
  • ~1/4 tsp Salt for fries
  • ~1/4 tsp Black Pepper for fries
  • ~1 tsp Granulated Garlic or Garlic powder for fries
  • Feta Cheese (optional)

  • If making Tzatziki sauce, mix all ingredients together, cover and let sit in the fridge (Tzatziki Sauce Link)
  • Add Bread crumbs, cream, and egg to a large mixing bowl and mix ingredients (bread will soak up the cream and egg)
  • Add salt, black pepper, oregano, thyme, marjoram, rosemary, cumin, crushed red peppers, and mix ingredients
  • Add ground hamburger and lamb, mixing all ingredients very well (you can use a food processor, hand mixer, or by hand)
  • Oil a piece of aluminum foil and move the meat mixture to the aluminum foil
  • Mould the meat mixture into a shape that will fit into your air fryer basket
  • Wrap the oiled aluminum foil up around the sides of the meat folding the corner to one side
  • Preheat the air fryer to 400°F for 5 minutes
  • Carefully drop the meat mixture wrapped in aluminum foil into the air fryer basket (aluminum foil side down)
  • Cook for 45 minutes at 300°F
  • Remove basket and using tongs and a spatula (I use a cookie spatula) carefully flip the meat over (you can keep the foil in the bottom of the air fryer basket or remove it)
  • Cook for 15 minutes at 300°F (60 minutes total at 300°F)
  • Make sure the center of the meat is at 165°F or higher and move the meat to a cutting board and tent with aluminum foil, set aside
  • Oil air fryer basket, add frozen fries, oil fries, liberally salt, pepper, and garlic powder or granulated garlic the fries
  • Cook fries at 400°F for 15 minutes shaking every ~5 minutes making sure they do not burn
  • Slice Tomatoes
  • Rip lettuce into medium pieces
  • Thin slice 1/2 sweet onion
  • Using tongs to hold the hot gyro meat, slice the gyro meat as thin as you can with a sharp knife or serrated knife
  • Warm pita bread in air fryer for a few minutes (optional)
  • Assemble gyros: pita bread, lettuce, 3-4 tomato slices, sweet onion slices, ~3 Tbsp tzatziki sauce, 2-3 slices of gyro meat, a small handful of fries, and if using feta, sprinkle some on top
  • Fold your gyro masterpiece and dive in!

Mixing the gyro meat ingredients very well is important.  A food processor works very well, a hand mixer works very well, and mixing by hand works good. You can use our Tzatziki sauce recipe or buy premade Tzatziki Sauce.  I really like the fries a little crispy and seasoned added into the gyro.  I recommend it!  With this Gyro meat, you can make a gyro sandwich, gyro salad, gyro fries, gyro nachos, gyro noodles…

What else!?
