a family of four cooking & creating our way through tiny living
Chex Mix in the Air Fryer is easy to make, tastes delicious, kids love it, and makes your home smell amazing! We make it, give everybody a couple handfuls and then let it cool. Once the Chex Mix is cool, we pour it into a gallon zip lock bag. When the kids are an hour past breakfast or lunch and say, “I’m hungry”, we give them a small bowl full and everybody is happy. It’s not only for kids you know. My wife and I enjoy snacking on Chex Mix also but we have to be careful not to eat the whole batch.
Chex Mix or Chex Party Mix was born in 1952 by the original Chex creator, Ralston Purina. The delicious party mix gained popularity slowly through the 1950’s and was finally packaged in the late 1980’s with two flavors, the original flavor and cheddar flavor. Sixteen new Chex Mix flavors were introduced by General Mills after they became the owners of Chex and Chex Mix in the mid 1990’s.
We cut the original batch in half for two reasons. The first reason is if we have a bunch of it, we’ll eat huge helpings of it and not be hungry for dinner, and second, a half batch fits perfect in our air fryer basket.
Get all of your ingredients out. We make it a little differently every time depending on what we have in the pantry and what fun things we can find at the grocery store. Now that you have the Chex you are using and all of the other fun snacks out on your work space, get a very large bowl out if you are making a full batch or a large bowl out for a half batch. Take your butter and slice it into six to eight slices or chunks. Put the butter slices in a small glass dish or microwave safe bowl. Microwave for a minute, stir the butter, and microwave another thirty seconds to a minute depending on your microwave power.
It is now time to add all of the cereal and snack ingredients to the large mixing bowl. Carefully stir the cereal and snack ingredients together so they are well mixed without breaking them into small pieces. Make sure the ingredients are mixed well so when the sauce is poured on top, it does not only cover the last added ingredient.
Now that our melted butter has had a chance to cool, lets add the rest of the sauce ingredients to the butter. Stir the sauce well making sure there are no chunks of unmelted butter. Feel free to add extra ingredients like hot sauce or sesame oil.
Spoon about 1/3 of the sauce evenly over the top of the Chex Mix in the large bowl. Stir the top ingredients into the rest of the ingredients. Repeat two more times making sure to mix your ingredients carefully.
Preheat your air fryer for 5 minutes at 400°F. Do not oil the air fryer basket. Add all of the Chex Mix to the air fryer basket or do two batches if it all does not fit. Set your air fryer to 200°F for 30 minutes. At fifteen minutes, shake and roll the air fryer basket to mix the Chex Mix well. Shake lightly so the ingredients do not turn into crumbs. Return the basket to the air fryer to finish the last of the thirty minutes.
When the Chex Mix in the air fryer is finished air frying, pour the check mix into a clean large bowl to cool. You can eat the Chex Mix right out of the air fryer, it is not to hot. The Chex Mix in the air fryer is light, crispy, and absolutely delicious!
